Senior Accountant (Nonprofit)

Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park, located in Richmond, Virginia, with many unique experiences for all to enjoy, including the historic Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating experiences that delight, educate and inspire its guests.

The Maymont Foundation is seeking a Senior Accountant. The Senior Accountant ensures the accuracy of all data in the accounting system and orchestrates the annual external audit. This position reports to the Manager of Business Operations.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversee financial control activities to verify and ensure accuracy of all data entry in the accounting system by reviewing and posting all entries to the general ledger from the accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts and journal entry sub ledgers
  • Manages full-cycle of weekly accounts payable process including account distribution review
  • Oversees fixed assets accounting, including additions, disposals and depreciation calculations
  • Oversees restricted project accounting including expenses, reporting, and project close out
  • Creates entries for endowment and investment accounts for reconciliation, allocation, and draw down
  • Analyzes data and prepares monthly reports related to financial results, operating costs, capital spending, and other areas as they arise
  • Manages annual audit and tax preparation processes, providing detailed records, account analysis, audit schedules and other financial reports for annual external audit and tax return
  • Monitors, prepares and submits regulatory (state and federal) compliance reports, as needed
  • Serves as backup for accounts payable, cash receipts, and general accountant as needed
  • Collaborates with the finance and accounting team to communicate status, propose solutions, and improve processes
  • Assists with other duties and tasks as assigned

  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Valid driver's license with reliable transportation to/from Maymont
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or related field. MBA, CPA or CNAP preferred
  • 5+ years of proven work experience in nonprofit finance or accounting
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP and general business terms and concepts
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with software programs including Microsoft Excel and Word. Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge a plus
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking and talking for extended periods
  • Frequent climbing, bending, stooping and lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
